Anne Morris explains what a Certificate of Sponsorship is.

“A certificate sponsorship is a self-certifying document that you issue to a Tier 2 person once you want to onboard them into your business.

“You can do this once your licence has been set up. You submit all the information online and a unique reference number is issued. So it’s not actually certificate. It’s just a unique reference number.

“Be cautious because once you have issued it, you can only assign it to that person. You cannot if for whatever reason they decide that they don’t want to join you, reassign it to somebody else.

“This is a common problem with employers. If you do this, this is considered to be a breach of your sponsorship licence duties. So be careful when you’re issuing a certificate.”
