Last week, the Government of Venezuela had announced that US citizens travelling to Venezuela would now require a visa to enter their country with further information being added to the Venezuelan Government’s Immigration website http://eeuu.embajada.gob.ve/index.php?lang=en.
Previously, US citizens were included on a list of countries that were exempted from requiring a visa to enter Venezuela as a tourist. This latest measure effectively repeals a long standing agreement between the countries in place since 2007. It should be noted however that citizens from Venezuela do not qualify for participation in the United States’ Visa Waiver Programme although most temporary visitors to the United States are able to obtain a non-immigrant visa before beginning their journey.
US citizens wishing to travel to Venezuela, for tourism purposes, must apply for a Venezuelan Tourist Visa (Visa de Turismo). Embassy visa application processing times would need to be factored in when planning travel arrangements and travel should not be booked until the visa has been issued unless advised otherwise.
It remains to be seen if other restrictions may be implemented on those US Citizens wishing to conduct business in Venezuela.
