Skilled Worker Going Rate

skilled worker visa going rate

IN THIS SECTION

One of the eligibility requirements under the Skilled Worker Visa route is that the role being recruited for pays the worker at least the relevant minimum salary threshold.

Under the current rules, the minimum threshold for most skilled workers is £38,700 per year, or £15.88 per hour, unless the ‘going rate’ for the particular role is higher. A lower threshold—typically £30,960, £29,000 or £23,200—previously applied under certain points-based tradeable options, but these have now been revised, and in most cases the lowest salary floor is now £25,000.

Each job eligible for the Skilled Worker visa is assigned a going rate. You can search the list of eligible occupations below by their occupational code (SOC) using the CASCOT coding tool to identify the relevant going rate for the job and ensure the salary on offer is the same as or above the threshold.

Most going rates are based on a 37.5-hour working week as set out in Tables 1, 2 and 2a of Appendix Skilled Occupations. However, doctors (Table 3) are assessed against a 40-hour week, and some roles in education and healthcare use alternative full-time definitions aligned with sector-specific pay scales. Employers may therefore need to pro-rate the going rate according to the actual hours stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship.

Need Assistance?

We are specialists in UK business immigration, with substantial experience and recognised expertise in advising employers and workers on UK employment sponsorship, sponsor licence applications and management, and Skilled Worker visa applications.

Minimum salary calculations can quickly become complex, but it’s critical that the sponsor gets this right. Issues with pay and salary levels can result in a refused visa application, or a curtailed visa for an existing sponsored worker if the Home Office alleges the individual is being paid below the relevant minimum level.

Skilled Worker Going Rate Salary FAQs

What is the ‘going rate’?

To qualify, the salary must meet whichever is higher of the general salary threshold applicable to the applicant’s circumstances and the occupation-specific going rate for the role. Both thresholds must be satisfied unless a valid exemption applies.

What is an occupation code?

Each job that is eligible under the skilled worker visa is listed under the Immigration Rules and assigned an occupation code. This code is also used to assigned a going rate for the salary, which the role must pay to be eligible for sponsorship. If the salary does not meet the going rate, the visa application will be refused.

What is the going rate for a Skilled Worker visa?

The going rate is the standard salary benchmark for a specific job in the UK, as defined by the Home Office. It determines salary eligibility for Skilled Worker visa applicants.

How is the going rate calculated?

The going rate is based on the national pay scale or industry standards for specific occupations, often derived from data provided by professional bodies or government resources.

Do I always need to meet the full going rate?

Applicants may qualify for reduced salary thresholds under certain ‘tradeable points’ options, such as ‘new entrants’ to the labour market or those holding PhDs relevant to the job.

What happens if my salary is below the going rate?

If your salary is below the going rate but meets the general salary threshold, you may still qualify under specific exemptions.

Are there different going rates for part-time workers?

The going rate is pro-rated for part-time roles. You must still meet the hourly rate and other salary requirements for your occupation.

Where can I find the going rate for my job?

The going rates for eligible occupations are listed in the Skilled Worker visa guidance on the UK government website.

Does the going rate apply to all job roles?

The going rate applies to jobs on the Skilled Worker visa list of eligible occupations. If your job is not on the list, you will not qualify under this visa route.

Can bonuses and benefits count towards meeting the going rate?

Only guaranteed basic gross salary that is taxable via PAYE can be counted. Bonuses, overtime, non-guaranteed commission, benefits-in-kind and allowances for living costs must be excluded. From April 2025, any repayments to the employer (e.g. for visa fees) must also be deducted unless part of a recognised salary-sacrifice scheme.

Are NHS roles subject to different going rates?

Roles in the NHS and certain state education positions are assessed against national pay scales, such as Agenda for Change or the STPCD for teachers. These often differ from the standard going rates shown for private sector roles.

Do I need to meet the going rate to extend my Skilled Worker visa?

You must continue to meet the going rate or any applicable reduced thresholds to extend your Skilled Worker visa or switch to ILR.

What is a new entrant?

A new entrant under the Skilled Worker visa route is an applicant who meets specific criteria—such as being under 26, switching from a Student or Graduate visa or working towards professional registration—which allows them to be paid a reduced salary compared to experienced workers. The lower salary thresholds only applies for a limited time (up to four years) and cannot be used for extensions or settlement applications.
