Key Takeaways

  • A new Priority Service allows British citizenship applicants to pay an additional £500 for faster processing.
  • Applications should normally be decided within 30 working days after biometric enrolment.
  • The Priority Service should be selected when the citizenship application is submitted and cannot be added later.
  • Paying for priority processing does not change the eligibility requirements or improve the prospects of approval.
  • Additional identity, security or other complex enquiries may extend processing beyond the published service standard.

The Home Office has launched a new Priority Service for British citizenship applications, offering a routine paid option for faster nationality decisions.

Although the service may significantly reduce waiting times for eligible applicants, the naturalisation eligibility requirements and supporting evidence assessment remain exactly the same as under the standard application process.

New Priority Processing for British Citizenship Applications

The Home Office has introduced a new Priority Service for British citizenship applications, allowing applicants to pay an additional £500 for a faster decision. Until now, British citizenship applications have not been eligible for routine paid priority processing, unlike many UK visa applications.

Applicants using the service should normally expect a decision within 30 working days. The published timeframe is a service standard rather than a guarantee, so applications requiring further enquiries or additional checks may still take longer.

The new service offers applicants more choice over how quickly a decision is made, but it does not change the application itself. The standard citizenship application fee still applies, with the £500 Priority Service fee charged in addition.

Although the change is straightforward, applicants should not assume paying for priority processing guarantees a quicker overall journey to becoming a British citizen. The 30-working-day service standard applies only to the Home Office’s consideration of the application. The practical operation of the service, including when the processing period begins and the circumstances in which applications may take longer, is equally important when deciding whether the additional fee is worthwhile.

How the Priority Service Works

Applicants choosing the Priority Service pay an additional £500 when they submit their British citizenship application. The decision has to be made at the outset because the Home Office will not allow an application already in the system to move onto the Priority Service later.

The Home Office starts the 30-working-day service standard after biometric information has been enrolled, not when the application is submitted. Anyone aiming for the quickest possible decision should therefore arrange a biometric appointment as soon as possible. Waiting several weeks to provide biometrics will inevitably extend the overall processing time.

The Priority Service speeds up the Home Office’s consideration of an application, but it does not guarantee a decision within 30 working days. Identity enquiries, national security checks, external verification and other complex investigations can all extend the process. The additional fee does not remove the need for those enquiries where the Home Office considers them necessary.

The new paid service also leaves the Home Office’s existing discretionary priority arrangements unchanged. Applicants facing exceptional circumstances, such as compelling compassionate reasons or delays caused by Home Office error, may still request expedited consideration under those separate arrangements.

Is the Priority Service Worth Paying For?

The value of the Priority Service depends largely on why a faster decision is needed. Applicants without a fixed deadline may see little advantage in paying an additional £500. Those working towards a specific travel date, an overseas relocation, a new role or another significant commitment may reach a different conclusion.

A faster citizenship decision can provide greater certainty where future plans depend on completing the citizenship process. Reducing the waiting period may allow applicants to move on more quickly to the remaining stages, including any required citizenship ceremony and a first British passport application. Even so, the Priority Service accelerates only the Home Office’s consideration of the citizenship application and does not shorten the stages that follow.

The greatest benefit is likely to arise where the application is straightforward and supported by complete evidence. Paying an additional fee does not avoid further enquiries into identity, residence, good character or other aspects of the application. Where those enquiries become necessary, the Priority Service may have less impact on the overall timescale.

DMS Perspective

For the first time, British citizenship applicants now have a routine option to pay for expedited processing, bringing nationality applications into line with a number of UK immigration routes that already offer premium processing services.

But, the new Priority Service only changes how quickly the Home Office aims to decide an application. It doesn’t reduce the evidence required, change the legal test or remove the possibility of further enquiries where the circumstances of the application require them.

For that reason, the decision to pay the additional fee should follow an assessment of the application itself. Straightforward applications supported by complete evidence and submitted to meet a specific deadline are likely to derive the greatest benefit. Where additional enquiries into residence, identity or the good character requirement are foreseeable, careful preparation before submission is likely to have a greater influence on the overall timescale than the choice of processing service.
